The Anaheim Ducks continue to fight for a playoff spot as they host the New York Islanders tonight as these two teams meet for the first time this season. The Islanders continue their five-game west coast road trip in Anaheim on a two-game losing streak as they sit well out of playoff contention at this point in the season. The Ducks on the other hand are playing game three of their six-game homestand as they are just two points outside of a wild card position. It’s time to continue our NHL odds series with an Islanders-Ducks prediction and pick.

Why The Islanders Can Cover The Spread/Win

The New York Islanders enter this contest on the second half of a road back-to-back after a 5-2 loss against the Los Angeles Kings yesterday. They look to bounce back tonight as they need to start consistently winning games if they want to make a playoff spot. Currently, they sit sixth in the Metropolitan Division with just 46 points and have not really been talked about much on the news/noise side of things. The Islanders will more than likely be looking to sell some players at the trade deadline if they don't start winning soon.

Goaltender Semyon Varlamov made the start last night so we can assume that Ilya Sorokin will get the nod between the pipes tonight. Sorokin has found a groove in his last few starts recently and putting up average numbers on the year with 2.44 goals allowed per game and a save percentage of .920%. He'll look to shut down the Ducks tonight as the Islanders need him to step up in a big way if they want to squeeze into a playoff spot.

Why The Ducks Can Cover The Spread/Win

The Anaheim Ducks continue their homestand after a 4-1 loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Friday night. As the Ducks slowly fall further in the standings, there is still plenty of games left to find a run, and they want to do so tonight.

However, goaltender John Gibson, who is typically known for being an excellent netminder, has found the yips lately. He's allowed four or more goals in every start since the All-Star break, going 1-4 in that stretch with a brutal .820 save percentage. On the year, he's now averaging 2.84 goals against per game with a save percentage of .911 as he looks to get another start in his home crease tonight. If he doesn't step up in a big way, the Ducks have no chance at making a playoff spot.

Final Islanders-Ducks Prediction & Pick

Besides recent goaltending, Anaheim is a better team offensively, and even with the poor attendance numbers at home, the Ducks are still 14-13 on home ice while the Islanders are 9-15 on the road. The Ducks are also 12-5 when they're listed as the favorite (8-4 as home favorites), compared to the Islanders being 2-18 when listed as an underdog (1-10 as road underdogs). I think this game could honestly go either way, considering both teams' recently poor playing, but based on the home and away records alone, it's a no-brainer to grab Anaheim on the Moneyline, with decent odds too
