The New York Rangers are stuck with 100 points, but they have a golden opportunity to get over the hundred-point mark later tonight when they go up against the struggling Philadelphia Flyers, who are virtually out of playoff contention. The Flyers are fresh off a forgettable loss to the Washington Capitals. Will the Rangers add to the headaches of Philadelphia? Or will the Flyers dig deep enough to score an upset over a division rival? With that said, it’s a good time to check out our NHL odds series, which includes our Rangers-Flyers prediction, odds, and pick we have laid out below.

Why the Rangers Could Cover the Spread

A rare stumble from Igor Shesterkin Tuesday night resulted in a 4-2 home loss for the Rangers at the hands of the Carolina Hurricanes. Shesterkin allowed three goals in 24 shots faced against the Canes, though, that’s hardly anything for the Rangers to be worried about. Shesterkin remains one of the best – if not the best – goalie this season, entering that Carolina game with a 34-11-4 record, 20.7 GAA, and .934 SV% — all top-five numbers in the league overall. It’s possible that Shesterkin gets a day off later tonight against the Flyers.

But if he gets the green light to start, that would be bad news for the Flyers, whom Shesterkin has owned this season. So far, Shesterkin is 2-0-1  in three starts, during which he rejected all but six of 88 shots faced. Then again, goalies could really look like Dominik Hasek when up against a Flyers’ offense that is producing a putrid average of just 2.6 goals for per contest. Philly can’t also be too ecstatic if Shesterkin’s backup, Alexandar Georgiev gets sent to patrol the crease for the Rangers, as he is coming off a sensational performance in his last start, stopping 20 of 21 shots in a 3-1 road win over the New Jersey Devils last week.

Rangers skaters could also add to the defensive woes of Philly that had just given up nearly 10 goals to the Washington Capitals Tuesday night. Artemi Panarin, Mika Zibanejad, and Chris Kreider each have two goals this season in games against the Flyers. New York heads to the City of Brotherly Love carrying a fantastic 6-1 record in its last seven games away from the Big Apple.

Why the Flyers Could Cover the Spread

The Flyers will just have to forget what transpired Tuesday in DC, where they got absolutely destroyed by the Washington Capitals to the tune of a 9-2 score. Philly has now lost three of four games and has been outscored, 14-5, in the last two outings. It’s not easy to feel optimistic about the Flyers at the moment because of those embarrassing performances. However, it should be noted that they won the last meeting with the Rangers; The Flyers beat New York at Madison Square Garden on Apr. 3 via shootout, 4-3.

They got to an early 2-0 lead in the first period and managed to survive a furious fightback from the Rangers, winning the contest on Kevin Hayes’ shootout score. The Flyers have also been more competitive in games against the Rangers than perhaps what the series record suggests. Two of three meetings between these teams were 1-goal contests. Moreover, the Flyers are actually outshooting New York in the regular-season series. Philadelphia produced 51 CF% or better twice against the Rangers.

That’s not exactly a surprise because one of the main issues for the Rangers this season is puck possession and finishing. So far in the 2021-22 NHL campaign, the Rangers have only won 17 games wherein they outshot their opponents and 29 when they were outshot, which shows just how much dependent New York is on Shesterkin. The Flyers will enter Wednesday’s showdown with New York with a 6-2 record in their last eight games in which they were the underdogs.

Final Rangers-Flyers Prediction & Pick

Both teams don’t have offenses that can be considered elite. They’re not even average in that area by league standards. And with the Rangers and the Flyers playing on the second set of a back-to-back, that seems to further dim their prospects of putting up enough goals to cover the line. Taking the Under for this game.

Final Rangers-Flyers Pick: Under 6.0 (-106)
