Why the Canadiens Could Win Game 1

What are the Canadiens doing in this deep portion of the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs? The Habs collected just 59 points in the regular season, good for only fourth in the North, but has picked it up just in time to become the biggest surprise of the postseason, so far. Montreal, however, is not shocked at all by the success the team is having.

For one, the Canadiens have full trust in goalie Carey Price. The netminder has turned it on in the playoffs. Price is dominating between the pipes, making 11 starts in the postseason thus far and recording a 1.97 GAA and a .935 SV%.  Price isn't the only one who's stepped it up in the postseason for Montreal.

Also impressing for the Habs is their depth, particularly their fourth line that's consisted of the trio of Corey Perry, Eric Staal, and Joel Armi. That line has been responsible for three goals in the playoffs. Montreal is also well-equipped to hush the Golden Knights' power play attacks.

The Canadiens have the best penalty kill in the postseason. They haven't even allowed a power-play goal in seven games, going into the semifinals. The Knights, on the other hand, are just 14th among all playoff teams with a 13.0 PP%.

Why the Golden Knights Could Win Game 1

The Golden Knights are the youngest franchise in the NHL and yet they are series win away from playing in their second Stanley Cup Playoffs. They are definitely oozing with confidence heading into the semifinals round following their conquest of the Colorado Avalanche in six games back in the second round.

The Avs are this year's winners of the Presidents' Trophy, but ran into a brick wall in the form of Vegas, which dominated on both ends of the ice in that series. Whereas the Habs have Price, the Golden Knights have Marc-Andre Fleury, a veteran who knows a thing or two about winning the Stanley Cup.

Fleury has started 12 games in the playoffs and will enter Game 1 against Montreal with a 1.91 GAA and .924 SV% since the regular season concluded. On offense, the Golden Knights, who humbled the Avs' solid defense, features two of the playoffs' top-eight goal-scoring lines.

The second line of Jonathan Marchessault, William Karlsson, and Reilly Smith leads all with 10 goals in 13 games, while the top line of Max Pacioretty, Chandler Stephenson, and Mark Stone are eighth with five goals.

Final Canadiens-Golden Knights Game 1 Prediction & Pick

The Golden Knights clearly are better than Montreal when you compare their regular-season resumes, but the Habs are doing an admirable job in the playoffs. That being said, the Golden Knights just destroyed Colorado, shutting down the Avs' offense while scoring a bunch of goals in the process. The Habs' magic will have to stop at some point, and it will in Game 1 against the more complete Vegas team.

FINAL PICK: Montreal Canadiens ( +232)
