Following a heart-breaking loss that saw the Denver Nuggets out of the playoffs, the team will have Nikola Jokic's future with the franchise as its No. 1 impending decision during this summer.

According to Jokic's agent, allowing his client to become an unrestricted free agent in 2019 by picking up his option this year would be “an unfavorable scenario” for the team, according to Nick Kosminder of The Athletic.

“This is not a warning. It’s common sense. Denver won’t pass up the chance to lock Jokic up. Writing is on the wall,” wrote Kosminder on a tweet.

The Nuggets have a lot of decisions to make, but they will all come after their key maneuver with Jokic, as the cornerstone of the roster.

Will Barton is also due for a contract, but his ultimatum of wanting a starting spot could prove too conditional for the team to meet, force to further shuffle the pieces in order to make it happen.

The Nuggets can give Jokic a maximum of five years for roughly $146 million, and while they may be enticed to save a chunk of money by letting him play out a ridiculously cheap $1.6 million season in 2018-19, it could prove a recipe for disaster, giving Jokic free rein to walk out after the end of next season.

Denver won't be allowed to enter negotiations until July 1, but rest assured the franchise won't play the risky game to save some dollars, prioritizing the stability of their club going forward before anything else.
