Without the services of All-Star point guard John Wall, the Washington Wizards were most likely going to miss the 2020 playoffs if the campaign didn't get suspended due to COVID-19. Washington was in ninth place and 5.5 games back of the Orlando Magic for the eighth and final postseason spot in the East.

Wall was set to miss the entire season recovering from his Achilles tear. The Wizards should be playoff contenders in 2020-21 with Wall and star shooting guard Bradley Beal leading the charge once again.

However, to ensure that the Wizards make the playoffs next season, Washington general manager Tommy Sheppard must re-sign sharpshooter Davis Bertans, who becomes an unrestricted free agent whenever the 2020 offseason period begins.

The Wizards chose not to trade Bertans at the 2020 trade deadline despite multiple teams calling about the stretch forward. Washington has confidence they can re-sign the Latvian big man, who averaged 15.4 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 54 games this season while shooting 43.4 percent from the field and 42.4 percent from beyond the arc.

Bertans is the perfect floor-spacer for the Wizards' brilliant backcourt duo of Wall and Beal. He made 200 shots from beyond the arc in 2019-20, and that was playing without Wall.

Defenders are never going to leave Bertans open from the wing. Wall, Beal and the other slashers on the Wizards can drive on Bertans’ side of the floor and get to the basket easier since there will be bigger lanes to attack.

The Wizards will most likely have to offer Bertans a deal that starts at $15 million annually since he’s going to be a hot commodity on the open market. The Latvian Laser fits with any team in the NBA since his elite shooting from the four spot is in demand these days.

When Wall and Bertans share the floor, the former is going to have an easy time getting to the basket since Bertans is going to bring his defender out to the perimeter due to his shooting prowess. The amount of driving lanes and space Wall is going to have to attack playing alongside a shooter like Bertans is going to do wonders for the former No. 1 overall pick.

Beal is one of the best guards in the NBA and Wall is eager to prove to everyone he is still one of the top point guards in the game despite his recent bouts with injuries. The Wizards envision Bertans running the floor with Wall and Beal, with forward Rui Hachimura carving up the mid-range and opposing centers running to the rim.
