The San Diego Padres have engaged in talks with the Pittsburgh Pirates regarding a possible trade involving talented outfielder Bryan Reynolds. Intent on adding outfield help, the Padres have gone as far as to offer pitchers Chris Paddack and Ryan Weathers in a potential deal. According to the latest rumors, here is the biggest obstacle preventing a Padres-Pirates Reynolds trade from happening, per Dennis Lin of The Athletic.

The Padres, desperate for outfield help, have discussed Paddack and Weathers with other clubs. But team and league sources Thursday said the asking price on Pirates star Bryan Reynolds, one longtime target, remains prohibitive.

According to the rumors, Lin says that the asking price on Reynolds is “prohibitive.” Could that mean that the Pirates are seeking more than the likes of Weathers and Paddack from the Padres in a trade?

Given the speculation coming from the Pirates' side of things, Pittsburgh could be after one or both of the Padres' two top prospects, CJ Abrams and Robert Hassell III.

For the Pirates, that makes perfect sense, seeing as Reynolds is their best trade chip and just so happens to be coming off of a career year, which saw him make the All-Star team for the first time while batting .302 with 24 homers, 90 RBI and 93 runs scored.

If the Pirates' asking price truly involves the Padres' two top prospects, it makes perfect sense why San Diego would consider it “prohibitive.” It will be interesting to see if trade talks are able to progress past this point.
