Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton wants to strengthen his mind, and in order to do that, he is giving up sex for a month.

During an appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Newton said he will be taking a vow of chastity:

“In March — I hope this is an adult crowd, it looks like it is — no climax,” Newton said.

When actor David Boreanz, who was also a guest on the show, jokingly suggested that Newton should have taken on that challenge during the 28-day month of February, Newton responded by saying that he “wanted it to be challenging.”

“It makes my mind stronger,” he said. “So when the season comes around, I say if I did those things, I’m mentally stronger.”

You can definitely see where Newton is coming from, as this is about discipline. He clearly feels that if he can accomplish the goal of giving something up for a month, he will be more mentally prepared to face the rigors of the 2019 NFL campaign.

Newton recently underwent arthroscopic surgery on his throwing shoulder after being shut down for the final two games of the 2018 season due to discomfort.

The fact that Newton was compromised in the second half of the year was obvious, as he threw nine of his 13 interceptions between Weeks 10 and 15 before the Panthers shut him down.

Overall, the 29-year-old threw for 3,395 yards and 24 touchdowns while completing 67.9 percent of his passes and registering a passer rating of 94.2 this past season.

Carolina won just seven games a season ago.
