Cam Newton has not been able to catch a break from injuries over the past couple of seasons. After starting the season following a shoulder injury that ended his season prematurely last year, the Carolina Panthers' quarterback suffered a foot injury. Now, he is expected to miss a good amount of time.

According to a report from Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, Newton is trying to avoid surgery on his foot and could be out for awhile.

Kyle Allen took over for Newton in the Panthers' Week 3 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals and looked really good. He completed 19 of his 26 pass attempts for 261 yards, four touchdowns, and no interceptions. There have been some rumblings that he could end up replacing Newton as the starter long-term.

Ron Rivera made it clear that Newton would be his starter when he returns, but this new report could change things a bit.

Now, the Panthers are going to get an extended look at Allen. The 23-year-old quarterback out of Houston could end up making Rivera change his mind. If he continues playing like he did against the Cardinals, going back to Newton might end up costing Rivera his job.

Hopefully, Newton will be able to avoid surgery. Whether he stays as the franchise quarterback in Carolina or not, health is always a concern. Newton has seemed to have lost the passion and emotion that he once had for the game due to all of his injury issues.

Expect to hear a lot more about Newton in the coming weeks, but don't expect him to make a return to the field anytime too soon.
