Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton underwent arthroscopic shoulder surgery on Thursday, marking the second procedure on his throwing shoulder inside of two years.

Newton then took to Twitter and called the surgery “a minor setback for a major comeback,” and two sources corroborated Newton's account, saying that the procedure was “relatively minor in nature,” according to Joseph Person of The Athletic.

Regardless of how “minor” the surgery was, you never want to see your quarterback undergoing multiple surgeries on his throwing shoulder.

Newton began experiencing problems with his right shoulder during the second half of the 2018 campaign, as the signal-caller threw nine interceptions between Weeks 10 and 15—including a four-pick performance in Week 13—before being shut down by the Panthers with two games remaining.

On the year overall, Newton threw for 3,395 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions while completing a career-high 67.9 percent of his passes and registering a passer rating of 94.2.

The 29-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Auburn University, was originally selected by Carolina with the first overall pick of the 2011 NFL Draft.

Overall, Newton has made three trips to Honolulu throughout his eight-year NFL career, including the 2015 campaign in which he finished with 3,837 yards, 35 touchdowns and 10 interceptions which resulted in him taking home the MVP award. Newton also led the Panthers to a Super Bowl appearance that year, but they fell to the Denver Broncos.
