The now-former Carolina Panthers running back Captain Munnerlyn was cut by the team. However, it happened in a very odd way. Per Joe Person of the Athletic, Munnerlyn was boarding a cruise ship with his family when he was informed of his release.

Munnerlyn told the Athletic:

“When they called me, Marty was like, ‘Aw, s—. I hate to do this. I was like, ‘Man, it’s cool.’ I’m an understandable guy. I know the nature of the business. . . .I kept going. I tapped my wife and told her. And she was like, ‘Aw, man.’ And I was like, ‘It’s cool.’ I’m not upset. You can’t even tell. I played my ass off for that organization. This is my second stint with the organization. I’m mad that it didn’t go as well as I wanted it to. . . . It is what it is. I’m not done.”

Last season for the Panthers, Munnerlyn only started five games but played in all 16. He had 47 tackles on the season with two sacks and one interception. The team prefers to use him as a hybrid nickelback in more coverage-orientated formations.

Munnerlyn is a 10-year NFL veteran who was selected in the seventh round in the 2009 draft by Carolina. His best season came in 2013. He totaled 77 tackles, had two interceptions and brought both of them back, as well as three sacks. The now 30-year-old cornerback is out of his prime. Hopefully, he'll catch on as a backup in the near future.

The Panthers last season had a record of 7-9 and finished second in the NFC South Division.
