The Carolina Panthers are moving on from Cam Newton, and it seems like they have found their replacement.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Panthers are finalizing a deal with Teddy Bridgewater that would make him their starting quarterback in 2020.

Rapoport says that a “basic agreement” is in place.

Bridgewater has spent the last couple of seasons with the New Orleans Saints, where he served as Drew Brees' backup. He was pressed into starting duty for five games in 2019 due to Brees' thumb injury, and during that time, he was terrific, throwing for 1,384 yards, nine touchdowns and a couple of interceptions while completing 67.9 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 99.1.

In addition, the Saints went 5-0 in Bridgewater's starts.

However, the 27-year-old comes with a caveat, as he has made just six starts since 2016 and has not been a full-time starter since his second year in the NFL back in 2015.

Bridgewater, who played his collegiate football at Louisville, was originally selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the first round (32nd pick overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft.

He was installed as the starter early on during his rookie campaign and experienced moderate success over his first two seasons, leading the Vikings to 11 wins and a playoff appearance in 2015.

But, that ensuing offseason, Bridgewater suffered a devastating knee injury that knocked him out for all of 2016 and effectively ended his run as Minnesota's starting quarterback.

The Jets signed him in 2018 and then quickly traded him to the Saints.

The Panthers went 5-11 this past season.
