The Carolina Panthers are gearing up for a do-or-die road matchup with the New Orleans Saints this coming Sunday, but Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart is still questionable to play in that game.

Stewart did not suit up in last Sunday’s 22-10 loss to the Atlanta Falcons because of tightness in his back, but while his status for the NFC Wild Card game showdown with the Saints remains up in the air, Panthers head coach Ron Rivera believes the 30-year-old tailback will be good to go by Sunday, per Joseph Person of The Charlotte Observer.

“No, I think Stew will be fine,” Rivera said Monday. “He told me he’s feeling better already.”

Without Stewart, the Panthers relied mostly on the legs of their dual-threat quarterback in Cam Newton on most of their ground attacks against the Falcons. Newton, however, rushed for only 59 yards on 11 carries, while Cameron Artis-Payne and Christian McCaffrey combined for only 30 rushing yards on 11 attempts.

Outside of Newton, Stewart is the Panthers top rusher this season with 680 yards on the ground to go with six touchdowns on 198 carries across 15 games.

In the event that Stewart will not get a green light to play, Newton, Artis Payne, and McCaffrey will share most of the rushing load against the Saints’ defense that ranked 16th against the run back in the regular season.
