The last two seasons for Carolina Panthers star tight end Greg Olsen have been nothing short of frustrating, due to breaking his foot in each campaign.

The pair of injuries have significantly limited his availability on the field, which has brought into question about whether the Panthers will keep him in the fold for the 2019 campaign.

With that in mind, Olsen has voiced that he hopes to be back next season but at the same time acknowledged that may be out of his control. (h/t Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk)

“I think that’s always your intention,” Olsen said, via Joe Person of The Athletic. “I still feel like I can play at a high level. Obviously I said that before the season too and it didn’t exactly work out. It’s been a frustrating two years, there’s no question about it. There’s a lot of other people who have a lot of say in it. What they feel my future is here, what other opportunities present themselves, it’s hard to say. I still enjoy playing. I still know I can play, but that decision isn’t always up to me.”

These comments come just a few days after head coach Ron Rivera voiced that he believes Olsen will be back for the 2019 season. However, Rivera could be on the hot seat as the Panthers have fallen short of the playoffs that may put him out of a job with the new ownership potentially heading in another direction.

When healthy, Olsen has proven to be a game-changing talent at the position as one of the primary receiving threats in the passing game that star quarterback Cam Newton has depended on greatly. He is also just two seasons removed from three straight 1,000 receiving yard campaigns.

Ultimately, this will come down to whether the Panthers believe his $7.1 million salary cap hit in base salary and bonuses is worth it in 2019.
