The Carolina Panthers surprised many when they opted to select NC State offensive tackle Ikem Ekwonu with the sixth pick in the first round of the NFL Draft, opting against taking a quarterback at that spot. However, Ekwonu fills a glaring need on the offensive line as a talented blocker with a mean streak. As such, the Panthers didn't wait long to officially make him a part of their long-term plans, signing him to a contract on Tuesday, as reported by the team's website and Joe Person of The Athletic.

Ekwonu agreed to terms on his four-year rookie contract Tuesday night. The deal includes an option for his fifth year.

Ekwonu has agreed to terms on a rookie deal that will pay him $27.6 million over four seasons, with a $17.2 million signing bonus, as reported by Person.

As with all rookie contracts, the deal includes a fifth-year option. Ekwonu, 21, can now enter training camp in July with the peace of mind that comes with a long-term deal.

Ekwonu played both guard and tackle for the Wolfpack- and will provide stability to an offensive line that desperately needs it. He posted the highest overall grade of any Power 5 offensive lineman this past season, per Pro Football Focus.

It sounds like Ekwonu is going to make the Panthers look smart, both for their selection of him and for their large investment.
