As per usual, the New England Patriots know what they're doing. The team just signed receiver Demaryius Thomas, and will reportedly pay him up to $6 million for the upcoming season.

The last time we saw Thomas, he was being carted off the field with a torn Achilles, so many thought he wouldn't be playing until well into the 2019 season.

That's apparently not the case, as James Palmer of NFL Network reports that Thomas is “expected to be available sooner than most believe he will be.”

Palmer also writes that “the Patriots probably know this because (Josh) McDaniels was around DT when his suffered his first Achilles and he came back in roughly 6 months.”

The Patriots were reportedly interested in trading for Thomas last year at the deadline before the Texans swooped in with a better offer, so this signing isn't too surprising. Thomas is 31 now and isn't where he once was physically, but he's still capable of being a highly productive receiver.

In his last full season in 2017, he caught 83 passes for 949 yards and five touchdowns with the Broncos. Despite tearing his Achilles right at the end of last season, it sounds like Thomas could be fully recovered in time for Week 1.

That doesn't necessarily mean he'll be able to take the field then, as Thomas is still dealing with an ongoing legal issue as well. Thomas was charged with vehicular assault back in February stemming from a car crash that happened while Thomas was driving.

It's possible he could face discipline from the league depending on what the investigation turns up.
