Former New England Patriots and University of Michigan linebacker Chase Winovich took to social media to announce his retirement from the NFL on Tuesday.

Winovich, 28, was a third-round pick of the Patriots in 2019 after a career at Michigan that saw him switch from linebacker to tight end, and finally to defensive end under coach Jim Harbaugh.

In Week 2 of his rookie season, Winovich earned 1.5 sacks in a shutout win over the Miami Dolphins and was named NFL Rookie of the Week. Chase Winovich played 45 games in three seasons in New England, recording 11 sacks, 86 tackles, a forced fumble, and an interception.

In 2022, Winovich was traded from the Patriots to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for Mack Wilson. He was placed on injured reserve after Week 2 that season and only ended up playing eight games for the Browns.

This March, Winovich signed a one-year contract with the Houston Texans before being waived before the start of the season. In late August, he signed a deal to join the Miami Dolphins practice squad. Winovich ended up playing in three games for the Dolphins this season, recording two tackles before being waived on October 17.

With his retirement, Winovich has amassed total NFL earnings exceeding $6 million, including $2 million in his most recent contract. He has remained active with Tammi Carr and The ChadTough Foundation to raise awareness of and money for research on diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma, a type of inoperable malignant tumor of the brainstem.

Winovich even went as far as participating in Dancing with the Michigan Stars, which raised more than $143,000 for the cause.
