It goes without saying that New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman has endured a bit of a rough stretch lately. Unfortunately, the end does not appear to be in sight just yet.

Edelman is still working his way back from a torn ACL that ended his 2017 campaign before it even begun. According to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk, he is admittedly still working to get his legs under him:

“I feel like I got to get my legs under me a lot more,” Edelman said in comments distributed by the team. “I don’t have my camp legs, I don’t have football legs and it’s evident out there. You get tired, you create bad habits, you don’t run your routes right and you get yelled at in meetings for it. I’m expecting to do that because I got to pick it up. I wasn’t as good as I want to be today and feeling that’s because I’m not in the best shape right now.”

Edelman's current status is certainly reason for concern at this point. With wide receivers Brandin Cooks and Danny Amendola gone, he is the only wideout quarterback Tom Brady has any real chemistry with. That said, perhaps there will be some upside to his suspension after all.

Edelman will miss the first four games of the 2018 NFL season after violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. Although a suspension is hardly ever good news, it should give him adequate time to make sure he is in football shape by the time he is able to return. The Patriots cannot afford to have any more slip-ups if they are to make it to their third consecutive Super Bowl.
