After an underwhelming season in his debut campaign with the New England Patriots last year, Cam Newton is out to prove that he can still be a starting quarterback in the NFL.

Last week, rookie quarterback Mac Jones was the talk of the town as he recorded a keen 87 passing yards in his preseason debut against the Washington Football Team, while Newton failed to impress with a mere 47 passing yards and one fumble.

In the Patriots' preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles, Newton came out with a point to prove.

The former NFL MVP winner shined in the first quarter as he connected with Jakobi Meyers for a keen 28-yard passing touchdown.

Overall, Newton was sharp during his time running the Patriots' offense against Philadelphia. He well showed off his prowess as a deep passer, as he went 3/3 for 51 passing yards on throws beyond 10-plus yards.

Newton had a quality overall showing in the game; he finished 8/9 for 103 passing yards, one passing touchdown and an astounding 151.4 passer rating.

The longtime Carolina Panthers star is currently in the midst of a must-watch duel with Jones for the Patriots' starting quarterback job. Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has yet to name on who will be the team's starting quarterback for the Week 1 home showdown against the Miami Dolphins. Nonetheless, he must like on what he has seen so far from the two passers.

Newton has a chip on his shoulder from last season's disappointing campaign, while Jones sure is out to prove plenty of doubters wrong in his rookie season.
