Aside from Robert Gronkowski, the New England Patriots are also dealing with a contract restructure with a different tight end in Dwayne Allen.

According to Field Yates of ESPN, Allen has agreed Patriots to take a pay cut with the Patriots for the 2018 season. Although the exact amount Allen’s salary will get diminished by was not detailed, Yates notes that the player originally had a cap hit of $5 million for the upcoming season, meaning his pay is going to be lower than that.

Unlike Gronk, Allen does not have much leverage on the negotiation table. With roster cuts just around the corner, he may be among those that will be left out of the final 53-man team based on his performance last year.

In 16 games played for the Patriots in 2017, Dwayne Allen posted a paltry stat line of 86 receiving yards and a touchdown on just 10 receptions.  Granted that Gronkowski is always going to end up eating a big chunk of the tight end role in the passing game in New England, Allen should’ve played a lot better than he did last season.

Earlier this month, Allen acknowledged to Ben Volin of the Boston Globe that he’s been a big letdown for the Pats.

“If anyone was let down last year, it was myself,” Allen said Wednesday “The way that I played and took care of my body, it just wasn’t representative of the player that I am or the man that I am.”

Allen did say that he’s now in a great condition, so if he makes the cut, he’s expected to contribute more to his team this time around.

Allen spent the first five years of his NFL career with the Indianapolis Colts before getting traded to New England in March of last year.
