With running back Jeremy Hill out for the remainder of the season with a knee injury, the New England Patriots needed to fill a hole on the depth chart, so they went out to shop for a new tailback. According to Mark Reiss of ESPN, the Patriots have signed Kenjon Barner, who also worked out with the team recently.

Jeremy Hill was signed back in March by the Patriots to a one-year deal, but his season was snuffed last wee, when he suffered a torn ACL injury in the win over the Houston Texans. New England is also currently dealing with an injury to rookie running back Sony Michel, who sat out the Houston game to continue his recovery from a recent knee procedure, so there’s really a need for the Patriots to shore up their depth in the backfield.

Prior to hooking up with the Patriots, Kenjon Barner signed with the Carolina Panthers back in May, but he was among the casualties of the team’s roster cut several days before the start of the 2018 season.

Barner was selected by the Panthers in the sixth round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles a year later. He was waived and signed by the Eagles in 2014 and plied his trade in Philly until 2017. Barner spent a part of 2017 with the Los Angeles Chargers before signing with the Eagles again.

In 45 game appearances in the NFL so far in his career, Barner has burned rubber for 317 rushing yards and three touchdowns. He also has 127 receiving yards.

Barner's first chance to see action as a Patriot will come this Sunday when New England pays the Jacksonville Jaguars a visit for a rematch of the AFC Championship Game.
