The New England Patriots are deep at the cornerback position despite the departure of former Pro Bowler Malcolm Butler, but they are still looking to upgrade if the right deal presents itself.

According to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport, the Patriots worked out former Washington Redskins cornerback Bashaud Breeland on Tuesday. The Clemson product has since told ESPN's Josina Anderson that he completed the workout and the two sides will be in touch over the next few days.

Breeland agreed to a three-year, $24 million contract with the Carolina Panthers earlier this offseason, but after failing his physical due to a freak accident (his foot became infected after he cut it on a trip to the Dominican Republic), the deal was dropped. In July he reportedly met with the Oakland Raiders and the Kansas City Chiefs, but nothing came of it.

The Patriots opened up another roster spot this week with the release of wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell, and with plenty of time to heal, Breeland could be ready to pass a physical and suit up for his next team. The 26-year-old has missed only four games in his four-year career, starting 59 times including one playoff appearance. Altogether, Breeland has racked up 216 tackles, 59 passes defensed, eight interceptions, and one touchdown, which came on a pick-six this past season.

If Breeland does sign with the Patriots, he'll have some stiff competition for playing time. Stephon Gilmore, Eric Rowe, and Duke Dawson are all slated for big roles, with Jason McCourty, Cyrus Jones J.C. Jackson, Ryan Lewis, Jonathan Jones, and Keion Crossen in the mix for three roster spots (one of which Breeland would take if a deal is agreed to).
