The New England Patriots have parted ways with a number of key players on offense from last season. The departure of left tackle Nate Solder in free agency has left them without their best offensive lineman.

Now their attention has turned toward keeping guard Shaq Mason for the long haul. According to Kevin Duffy of the Boston Herald, the interest is mutual from Mason.

“Yes, I would,” Mason said. “But as far as all that goes, I don’t look ahead, honestly. I’m just worried about reporting to training camp July 25 and taking it from there.”

Mason is entering the final year of his rookie contract. However, he seems to be more focus on stepping his game up this season.

“Honestly, I’ve been working and just taking it one step at a time,” Mason said. “Just honing in on details, the smaller things of my game, just become a better overall player.”

New England selected Mason in the fourth round of the 2015 NFL Draft. He has since become an integral part of the Patriots' offensive line. He is coming off is the best season yet after finishing as the No. 10 guard in the league, according to Pro Football Focus.

The Patriots can still sign Mason to a long-term deal before the 2018 NFL season begins. It would certainly make sense given the franchise tag would not be a viable option for a guard. Otherwise, they will have to cough up some major cash come next year if they are to shore up the protection around quarterback Tom Brady moving forward.
