Cam Newton and the New England Patriots offense struggled again in a 24-3 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday, but offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is taking the blame.

McDaniels said he has not put Newton in good positions to succeed, despite the narrative mostly focusing on Newton's performance under center:

“Cam’s certainly been the best option for us all year long since he earned the opportunity in training camp,” McDaniels said Friday, via Doug Kyed of NESN. “Whenever the offense struggles, I know the attention is going to turn to that position. It’s my responsibility to put us in a position to be more productive.”

Newton completed just 9-of-16 passes for 119 yards and also threw a pick-six. But he had almost no time to throw, as the Rams' defensive front constantly got in Newton's face and sacked him four times for 31 yards.

The former league MVP's play has been all over the place.

Newton was tremendous in each of his first two starts, seemingly giving the Patriots a more unique weapon with his rushing ability and opening up run-pass option looks. But he has also thrown just five touchdown passes against ten interceptions, and has made some altogether poor throws to receivers especially in recent weeks.

Still, New England is sticking by Newton as its quarterback. Head coach Bill Belichick said immediately after the game Cam would be the starter going forward, and McDaniels' forceful endorsement seems to indicate he feels Newton can rediscover early-season success if he does a better job of scheming.
