New Orleans Pelicans head coach Alvin Gentry didn't need to make a case for his star player, Anthony Davis, who has been in a torrid run as of late; but he still did.

Davis has been averaging 35.8 points, 13 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 2.2 steals, and 2.8 blocks in his last five games — numbers that surely have him as one of the most dangerous stars on the floor in this past week.

“It's tough to be the MVP in the league when you're in the middle of the pack (in the standings),” Gentry said, according to Jeff Duncan of the New Orleans Times-Picayune. “If we had 40 wins right now I think he would definitely be in the conversation. But if they don't notice what this guy is doing… because there is nobody else in the league coming close. And (Denver Nuggets coach) Mike Malone can talk about (Nikola) Jokic all he wants. It's not even close.”

Gentry is right on the money — Jokic is developing nicely, but he is still miles from the two-way star Davis has become over the last few years — a mix of strength, athleticism, and shooting touch unlike the league has ever seen.

Davis is on an absolute tear, leading the Pelicans to seven straight wins and posting outrageous averages during the month of February, putting up 35.9 points, 12.8 rebounds, 2.5 steals, and 2.4 blocks during it.

The Brow has four 40-point games and a recent 50-point game against the Phoenix Suns, marking the best scoring barrage of the month in the entire league.

Gentry is well aware that Davis has had to step his game up without DeMarcus Cousins in the lineup, and even though he counts with another shooter in Nikola Mirotic, there's still plenty of work to be done to grab a firm hold of the playoffs.
