Cade Cunningham's start with the Detroit Pistons may be rocky, but he is now showing why the Motor City team drafted him first overall in the 2021 Draft.

On Friday in their Summer League showdown against the New York Knicks, Cunningham led the Pistons to a 93-87 victory. The former Oklahoma State standout scored 24 points on top of seven rebounds and three assists. He also shot better with a 70 percent (7-of-10) shooting clip from beyond the arc, all while banking the critical triples in crunch time to prevent any hopes for a Knicks comeback.

After the game, Cunningham highlighted his desire to have the ball and lead his team in the most crucial of situations.

“Any time the game is close or in crunch time, I kind of feel like a magnet from my hands to the ball. I want the ball in my hands. My teammates trust me. I’m going to keep bragging on my teammates. It was a big-time win and that’s what we needed,” the Pistons rookie shared, per NBA.com.

The Pistons would probably want Cade Cunningham get the ball in the clutch often. It proved effective against the Knicks, and it could very well work in their favor if they allow their prized rookie develop into a true closer.

Cunningham stopped a 14-2 run by the Knicks with a clutch triple in 4:31 mark of the fourth quarter–all after New York decreased a 21-point lead to nine. Later in the quarter, he made sure the ‘Bockers will not be able to gain any momentum with another beautiful corner 3-pointer.

Cunningham's quick development will be crucial for the Pistons if they want to return to playoff contention sooner rather than later. Luckily for Detroit, they can give him that opportunity right at the start of his rookie year.
