Portugal comes into the game are the heavy favorite to win the group. They sit on FanDuel at -210 to win Group F, as opposed to Czechia who sits at +500. Still, Portugal has underperformed in recent years are major European competitions. After winning the tournament in 2016, they would be eliminated in the round of 16 last time. Then, in the World Cup, after winning their group, they would fall to Morocco in the round of eight. Regardless, this is a group-stage match, and Portugal is once again favored to win.

Czechia has been solid in recent international play. In qualifying, they lost just once, falling 3-0 to Albania. They also came away with four wins, and two draws, including a draw against Albania, and a win over Poland. Still, this is a major step up in competition for the Czech side.

Why Portugal Will Win

Portugal dominated in qualifying, winning all ten of their matches. Not only did they win all ten, they allowed goals in just one game, a 3-2 win over Slovakia. Portugal was scoring 3.6 goals per game in qualifying and will be looking to keep that going. This will be led by Cristiano Ronaldo. He played in just nine of the ten matches, scoring ten goals and having an assist. He scored three penalty kicks in those ten goals and was averaging 1.25 goals per match. Even without the penalty kicks, he was scoring .87 goals per match and had a point per match in qualifying. He was set up by Bruno Fernandes. Fernandes played in all ten matches and also did his fair share of scoring. he scored six goals in those matches but set up players with eight assists. that gave him 1.5 points per match.

Rounding out the top trio is Bernardo Silva. Silva played in nine matches, scoring three times and having four assists. While most of the focus is on Fernandes and Ronaldo, Silva can create scoring opportunities that make Portugal a tough team to stop. Portugal also has quality depth. Four different players scored three goals in qualifying. Silva was one of them, but another was Joao Felix. Felix appeared in eight matches, with just six starts. He would come away with three goals and one assist. Felix also created pressure, sitting third on the team in shots on target in qualifying with ten.

Why Czechia Will Win

Czechia played well in qualifying as well. They scored 1.5 goals per game, putting up 12 goals in qualifying. They also showed quality defense, allowing just six goals total, or .75 goals per match. Tomas Soucek led the offensive attack for Czechia. He scored three times and had one assist in eight games in qualifying. He also was second on the team in total shots with 18 and put five of them on target. Vaclav Cerney was also solid. He played in just five games but would score three times in the five games. Rounding out the top pressure makers on offense is Romas Cvancara. He took 18 shots with six on target, still, he came away with just one goal in qualifying.

The defense will be a key factor for Czechia getting the win. Jiri Pavelnka's players are solid in goal, allowing five goals over five starts. Still, he has two clean sheets in his five starts. Another key factor will be Tomas Holes. Holes played in eight marches on defense, having a plus-eight rating in the eight matches, the best on the team. He had four interceptions and nine tackles won with just two fouls in his eight games. Adam Hlozek will also need to hold down things at the midfield on defense. He played in eight matches, with a plus-six rating in those matches. Per 90 minutes, Czechia scored 1.13 goals more than their competition when Hlozek was on the pitch.

Final Portugal-Czechia Prediction & Pick

The Czechia defense was solid in qualifying this year. Still, they did not face the same level of competition as they would against Portugal. Czechia will be able to create some counter opportunities in this game and could score once. That will not be enough to get the win though. Portugal will win this one with ease, and the over will hit in the process.
