Lionel Messi just finished up his first season with PSG, winning a Ligue 1 title and flashing his brilliance at different moments. While it wasn't a signature Messi-type season that we got so used to seeing at Barcelona, he was also left battling some long-term issues from COVID-19.

The Argentine tested positive for the virus in early January and ended up missing a couple of weeks after the Christmas break. The PSG frontman detailed his battle with Coronavirus and although Messi had most of the usual symptoms, he had trouble breathing and running after recovering.

Via Luis Miguel Echegaray:

“The truth is it hit me v. hard. Symptoms very similar to how everyone else gets it. Coughing, sore throat, fever. But I also left me w/ post covid issues…in the lungs. I couldn't train. Couldn’t even run…”

That is extremely scary. The virus evidently hits everyone differently and the PSG star was one person who really felt the effects. Messi finished the league campaign with six goals and 14 assists in 26 appearances while also scoring five times in the Champions League before they bowed out in the Round of 16 to champions, Real Madrid.

Perhaps his slow recovery played a part in Messi struggling to score goals for PSG. But, all that matters is that he's okay now. Paris will be hoping the Barca legend can contribute at a higher level in 2022-23 alongside Kylian Mbappe, who just signed a brand new three-year deal to stay in the French capital.
