Oakland Raiders general manager Mike Mayok has come out in praise of Derek Carr and said that he believes the quarterback is a “franchise quarterback.”

Carr has plenty of good things going for him. His brother is former NFL quarterback David Carr, so talent definitely runs in the family.

Carr was selected by the Raiders in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft with the 36th overall pick. He was the fourth quarterback to be selected that year. On May 16, he was assigned his requested number of four. On May 21, he was signed to a four-year, $5.37 million contract with a $2.2 million signing bonus.

Derek Carr also has an extensive history of successes with the Raiders. Carr finished his rookie season in 2015 with 3,270 passing yards, 21 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. He became the first Raiders quarterback to start all 16 games since Rich Gannon in 2002.

Despite a great early start, however, Carr floundered a bit this past season. With a disappointing 4–12 record, Carr finished the season with a career-high 4,049 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. In Week 9 against the San Francisco 49ers, Carr was benched in the fourth quarter for AJ McCarron after the Raiders were losing 31-3. Before he was benched, Carr passed for 171 yards.

It should be interesting to see if Derek Carr, ultimately, becomes a franchise quarterback, and what that means for both him as a player and the Raiders as a whole. We will definitely keep you posted on what happens to him now and in the future.
