The Oakland Raiders invested heavily in their offensive line during the NFL Draft by taking two offensive tackles with their first three picks. They used their first-round pick (No. 15 overall) to take UCLA’s Kolton Miller, who has a decent chance of starting for the team this season.

But instead of starting out the rookie at right tackle, the Raiders have Miller working almost exclusively at left tackle, which is the position Jon Gruden and the team see him playing.

“That's where he has recently played,” Gruden said of Miller per Paul Gutierrez of ESPN. “We like him at left tackle. We think he's a prototype left tackle. He can bend, he's got the length that you're looking for and he's a sharp kid…that doesn't mean that's where they're going to end up, though.”

The Raiders currently have former Pro Bowler Donald Penn penciled into the starting left tackle spot. However, Penn is already 35 years of age and is still recovering from a Lisfranc surgery in his right foot. There’s also the not-so-small matter of the domestic violence allegations he’s facing, which could possibly lead to a lengthy suspension.

If Penn does miss time either due to injury or suspension, the Raiders will at least have another option in Miller to start and do a job protecting Derek Carr’s blindside. But if Penn is available, Miller should still be able to compete with veteran Breno Giacomini for the starting tackle spot over on the right side while he waits for the left tackle job to open up.
