As the Las Vegas Raiders look to get back to the postseason after a surprisingly successful 2021 season. They will have to keep their core of players in tact, as many of them need work done on their contracts.

According to Vic Tafur of The Athletic, the Raiders are working on a contract extension for Maxx Crosby, their young Pro Bowl defensive end. The deal would make the 24-year-old one of the highest-paid defensive players in the NFL and could happen before Las Vegas reaches an extension with quarterback Derek Carr.

Raiders general manager Dave Ziegler explained that they aren't there yet. Although he didn't sound super urgent, he knows that Crosby is important to the team.

“As we’re kind of going through free agency and getting to the draft, there are going to be some of those organic conversations you’re going to have. I wouldn’t say we’re there yet,” Ziegler said. “I know it’s a curious question and I get that, but we’re just trying to take so many small bites right now.

“In due time, we’ll look at all those things. But it’s always good to have good players.”

Last season, Crosby ranked just outside the top 30 in sacks but was one of six players with at least 30 quarterback hits and recorded seven defended passes, one of the best ranks for defensive linemen.

Indeed, good players like Crosby will get the Raiders back to the playoffs. Head coach Josh McDaniels isn't a fan of waiting around and rebuilding. He and Ziegler want to keep the ball rolling.
