The Oakland Raiders have brought in another player to compete for Derek Carr's backup spot for the upcoming 2018 NFL season. The depth chart behind Carr has fluctuated over the last few years with the team struggling to find a viable option behind their perennial Pro Bowler under center, but now new head coach Jon Gruden has signed a player from his past.

According to Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk, the team has agreed to a deal with quarterback Josh Johnson who was drafted by Gruden 10 years ago.

Josh Johnson has reunited with Jon Gruden.

Johnson has signed with the Raiders, his agent, Doug Hendrickson, announced on Twitter.

The quarterback makes perfect sense for the Raiders. Gruden drafted Johnson in the fifth round in 2008, Gruden’s final season in Tampa Bay. Thus, Johnson knows the offense already.

Along with having the connection to Gruden from their time together in Tampa Bay, Johnson also has a link to one of the best players on the team. Johnson is an Oakland native and a cousin of veteran running back Marshawn Lynch, according to Matt Schneidman of the Bay Area News Group.

Johnson was Marshawn Lynch’s quarterback at Oakland Tech High School. They’re also cousins. The two, along with Los Angeles Rams cornerback Marcus Peters, mentor at-risk youth across diverse populations through the Fam1st Family Foundation.

With Johnson and Connor Cook on the roster, the Raiders brass may be ready to part ways with EJ Manuel who is currently a free agent. The Gruden regime is all-in on developing Carr to be the best quarterback he can be, so these backups are simply insurance policies moving forward.

Johnson has bounced around the NFL after being with the Bucs for his first three seasons in the league. The soon-to-be 32-year-old has thrown only 177 passes in his career with a grand total of 1,042 yards, five touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.

However, Carr has dealt with some injuries over the last couple of seasons which makes the backup role important. The team obviously hasn't given up on Cook, but it remains to be seen if Johnson makes the final roster or if Manuel is truly done in Oakland after one season.
