Left tackle Kolton Miller turned heads at the NFL Scouting Combine with his rare blend of size and explosiveness. However, it appears the Oakland Raiders still had a few things for him to brush up on before the start of training camp.

Head coach Jon Gruden made it clear that he wanted the rookie to pack on some more weight in preparation for the 2018 NFL season. According to Michael Gehlken of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, his private trainer Dan Jameson says Miller has gained 12 pounds since being selected with the 15th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

“Kolton’s put good weight on,” Jameson said. “It’s not ‘dad bod.’ It’s not all around his waist. It’s in his shoulders. It’s in his arms. It’s in his back. . . . Kolton’s ready. Kolton’s ready to learn. He’s ready to handle his business. He’s ready to just be a sponge and take it all in and be the best he can be.”

It is not unusual for teams to ask new draftees to bulk up for training camp. However, the challenge is making sure that it is a healthy weight and not the type that could hinder Miller's development moving forward. That said, it is encouraging to see the rookie had no issues following through on the team's wishes.

The Raiders took many by surprise with the selection considering they already have a viable option at left tackle in Donald Penn. Now that Miller is starting to look the part of a blindside protector, he is one step closer to potentially replacing Penn in the near future. He will need every advantage he can get if he is going to neutralize the bevy of star pass-rushers in the AFC West Division.
