Los Angeles Rams safety Eric Weddle has been placed in concussion protocol after colliding with Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey on Sunday, according to Gary Klein of The Los Angeles Times.

The incident occurred when McCaffrey was trying to hurdler over Weddle in the second quarter. Weddle was then carted off of the field.

The Rams went on to win the game by a score of 30-27, but head coach Sean McVay said that the veteran's presence was missed:

“When you lose somebody like Eric with what he means to our team — the communication, some of those things— it can be deflating,” McVay said. “But I thought our guys did a great job handling it.”

Weddle was in the locker room after the game, and while he was not available to reporters, he said he was fine.

Los Angeles signed Weddle back in March after he was cut by the Baltimore Ravens.

The 34-year-old is coming off of a 2018 campaign in which he played all 16 games and registered 68 tackles and a sack, en route to a Pro Bowl appearance. He has not missed a game since 2015.

Weddle, who played his collegiate football at the University of Utah, was originally selected by the then-San Diego Chargers in the second round (37th pick overall) of the 2007 NFL Draft.

He spent the first nine years of his career with the Chargers, making three Pro Bowls and earning a couple of First-Team All-Pro selections. He then went on to sign with the Ravens, where he would make the Pro Bowl in each of his three seasons with the club.
