There's no way to sugarcoat it. The Toronto Raptors were punched in the mouth in their Game 1 face-off against the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday.

The Sixers controlled the game from the jump and led by double-digits for the entire second half. Raptors head coach Nick Nurse wanted his team to take in the troubling defeat to bounce back in the next games to come.

Via Josh Lewenberg:

“We’ve gotta learn some lessons from today, not only tactically but also mentally and physically, and we’ve gotta play a lot better,” said the Raptors coach.

With a bruising superstar big man like Joel Embiid, Nurse knew the physicality would come. While the Raptors were able to contain the All-Star center, limiting him to just 19 points on 5-for-15 shooting, but it was the rest of the Sixers who showed up in his stead.

Philadelphia got 86 points combined from the trio of James Harden, Tobias Harris, and Tyrese Maxey. The latter of which erupted for a monster 38-point night.

“I’m not surprised they were highly motivated and ready to go. I think there’s a lot of expectations on them. They were going to try to bully us right off the floor and deliver a blow to see if we would go away. Now we’re gonna find out if we will or not.”

Given Nick Nurse' reputation as a highly cerebral head coach, it's safe to assume that adjustment will be coming for the next game. It's just a matter of seeing whether or not the Raptors can follow through and make it a series.
