Following a breakout campaign, it has been nothing short of a disappointing 2018 season that has seen Baltimore Ravens running back Alex Collins struggle to put together a productive year.

This has taken another downward turn as the Ravens announced on Saturday that Collins was placed on the season-ending injured reserve.

This is a discouraging close to his 2018 campaign as he struggled to find any consistency out of the backfield. He had entered the year with an opportunity to firmly secure the starting job after a career-best year in his first season with the Ravens where he finished 11th in the league with 973 rushing yards, while his 4.6 yards per attempt ranked eighth-best in his 12 starts. This also includes his first two 100-yard performances.

Collins had shown some big-play ability in the running game while he had brought stability to that aspect of the offense that the team had lacked for quite some time. His play had also put him firmly ahead of both Javorius Allen and Kenneth Dixon, but didn't play out in that manner this season as he struggled to produce while injury became a prominent factor. While he leads the team with eight touchdowns, his uneven play has seen him lose playing time to him his teammates, who have stepped into more prominent roles in the offensive game plan.

This has certainly been the case in the last two weeks with rookie Gus Edwards taking full advantage of that opportunity as he has taken grasp of the starting job behind a pair of 100 rushing yard outings. Edwards has shown to be a strong complement in the running game alongside rookie quarterback Lamar Jackson as both have played off each other in the read option sets over that span. He will have the chance to build on that once again in this week's matchup against the Atlanta Falcons. Meanwhile, this puts Collins' future in Baltimore up in the air following this season.
