Baltimore Ravens cornerback Jimmy Smith and his family were reportedly robbed at gunpoint Tuesday night, per Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic.

Zrebiac says Smith and his family were followed all the way from LAX to their hotel. Fortunately, neither Smith nor the rest of his family were harmed in the robbery. Smith has been in contact with the team regarding the incident, per Zrebiac.

The Ravens released a statement addressing the robbery:

“We are aware of the situation involving Jimmy Smith,” the statement read, via Zrebiac. “We have spoken with Jimmy and he and his family are safe.”

Certainly an alarming situation for Smith and his family, though it is obviously positive nobody was hurt. Details of the incident are still emerging.

Smith has been with the Ravens for the entirety of his 10-year career after Baltimore selected him with the 27th overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft.

The 32-year-old has split time between being an outside corner and playing in the slot, in addition to taking some snaps at the safety spot. He was tremendous in 2020, ranking as one of Pro Football Focus' highest-graded cornerbacks through the first half of the season and making the most of his snaps in a secondary also including Marcus Peters and Marlon Humphrey.

It remains to be seen whether Smith will remain in Baltimore.

Smith re-signed with the Ravens on a one-year deal last spring. But he is once again a free agent and might be after a starting opportunity in free agency. Then again, Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta has never been shy about adding defensive depth.

Smith's football future is an unknown. For now, however, the organization is surely relieved to know he and his family are safe.
