It's been a rough year for Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Shane Baz. He didn't make his season debut until June 11th after recovering from arthroscopic surgery. Shortly after, he went back on the shelf with another elbow setback. As he started to ramp things up in the hope of a return, Baz has now suffered soreness in his elbow again and there is currently no timetable for return.

Via Marc Topkin:

“Baz experienced right elbow discomfort while playing catch on Tuesday. He was evaluated today by Dr. Keith Meister in Dallas. He will receive an injection, rest and rehab for at least the next four weeks.”

It'll essentially depend on how Shane Baz recovers over the next month. But at this point, he's certainly not anywhere close to getting back on the mound for the Rays, which is very disappointing.

The 23-year-old made six starts in 2022 so far, tossing 27 innings and compiling an ERA of five. He got hit around quite a bit too, giving up five homers during that span.

Realistically, it's unlikely Baz returns before September. That being said, Tampa definitely needs to go out at the trade deadline and acquire another starting pitcher. Their staff has pitched very well this year but it's clear this team needs another rotational piece.

Hopefully, Baz is back on a throwing program sooner rather than later because he is a very promising arm and when healthy, can be an important arm for the Rays. Let's hope there are no more setbacks moving forward for the former first-round pick.
