The Washington Redskins fired head coach Jay Gruden on the Monday following their Week 5 blowout loss to the New England Patriots.

Now 0-5, they'll be looking for a permanent replacement. Former NFL head coach Rex Ryan says he would take the job.

Now, you could argue this was a simple off-the-cuff remark. You could say Ryan was saying this to get his point across but that doesn't seem to be the case. The reality is, Ryan is 100% right.

No matter how much of a mess the Washington situation seems to be, coaches will line up for the job. The reason for that is really simple, it's a head coaching job. It's a chance for coaches to prove they can lead a team.

Ryan was a head coach in the NFL from 2009 to 2016. From 2009 to 2014 he was the head coach of the New York Jets. Then for 2015 and 2016 he was the head coach of the Buffalo Bills.

In that time, Ryan went 61-66. However, five of his seasons saw his team go at least .500. Two of them were winning seasons, and he won four playoff games in that time.

For those keeping track, that's two more playoff wins than the Redskins have had since owner Dan Snyder took over 21 years ago.

Ryan has become a favorite of football fans due to his openness and ability to laugh at himself. It's something that he continued to show here as he quickly threw his hat into the ring, maybe.

If Ryan is serious about this, he'll likely get a look as Washington needs to explore every possible avenue. They can't continue to mess things up.

As for the other coaches, expect Ryan to be right. There are countless coaches who would gladly become the next head coach of the Redskins, no matter how much you might not want to believe it.
