In one out of left field move, the San Diego Padres have elected to hire Bob Melvin as their new manager, according to MLB.com's AJ Cassavell. The two sides have reportedly come to terms on a three-year contract deal.

The Padres had contacted the Athletics front office to inquire on whether they would be allowed to interview Melvin for their managerial vacancy, which comes after Oakland extended his option for the 2022 season over the summer.

Now, the Padres have not only agreed to name Melvin as their new manager, but the team will also not send compensation to Oakland as part of the agreement.

Melvin leaves the Athletics after 11 seasons with the team. He led Oakland to six postseason appearances, although the team never appeared in the ALCS during his run there. This came as the Athletics perennially ranked in the bottom half of the league in team payroll during his managerial run, which included ranking at 18th this season with a mere $81.3 million tied to contracts.

Melvin replaces Jayce Tingler, who was let go by the team after one underwhelming campaign. While the Padres were tabbed as one of the biggest offseason winners last year, they failed to clinch a spot in the postseason, as injuries marred their campaign.

The Athletics are now on the lookout for their next manager, while the Padres now shift gears to the upcoming and much-anticipated free agency period.
