From the category of news you will only see once department, at least reportedly, Detroit Lions punter Sam Martin was injured in a mysterious conch shell incident.

According to Justin Rogers of the Detroit News, two sources said the mysterious injury was caused when Martin either stepped on or dropped a conch shell on his foot.

For clarification, this isn't a new injury. It was the one that sidelined him during spring training camp.

Also, for whatever it is worth, Rogers' sources couldn't really figure out how exactly the conch shell injured Sam Martin. One was apparently under the impression the punter stepped on it, while the other figures the Lions talent dropped it on his own body.

This is, folks, what investigative journalism was born to find out.

In a bit of seriousness, this does clear up some rumors that Martin may have injured himself doing something reckless. While a conch shell injury is weird as all heck, I don't think anyone could really be mad at him for what appears to be an honest mistake.

Martin returned to the lineup this past weekend for Detroit. He played well. Outside of one shanked punt, Martin recorded touchbacks on all six of his kickoffs and averaged 50 yards on his other two punts. That was in the team's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

This is coming after a stellar 2016 campaign by the punter. Last year, he posted the second-best net punting average since the league began tracking the stat in 1976.

Just stay away from conch shells, kids. That's the lesson to be learned here.
