Mike D'Antoni's days as Houston Rockets coach is likely numbered after he failed to lead them past the Golden State Warriors for the second consecutive season.

According to Kelly Iko of The Athletic, the top assistant coach the Rockets will hire will likely become the eventual successor of D'Antoni.

The Rockets parted ways with top assistant Jeff Bzdelik after their playoff exit despite the fact that the veteran coach sacrificed and ended his retirement to help Houston improve their defense.

Following the sacking of Bzdelik, the Rockets made more bold moves on their coaching staff. Houston also told assistant coach Roy Rogers, assistant coach Mitch Vanya, video coordinator John Cho, and player development assistant Irv Roland that they will not return next season.

The house cleaning that happened in Houston's coaching staff made people in the community wonder if the Rockets are pushing D'Antoni out. It was also revealed that D'Antoni will return next season, but the decision was made not by general manager Daryl Morey, but by team owner Tilman Fertitta.

The Rockets are currently on the process of hiring a top assistant coach. Houston reportedly reached out to former Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Tyronn Lue to offer the position.

However, the 2016 NBA champion coach remains focused on getting a head coaching job.
