New Orleans Saints Pro Bowl quarterback Drew Brees has continued to move up the ranks on the all-time passing yards list, and he is now within an earshot of future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning for the number one spot.

According to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk, Brees could break the all-time record near the halfway point of the season.

So how soon will that happen? It should be around the sixth game of the season that Brees will break Manning’s record for career passing yards. Manning’s all-time record is 71,940 yards. Brees has 70,445 yards. That’s a difference of 1,495 yards, so if Brees averages about 270 yards a game this year like he did last year, he’ll break the record in Week Seven, after the Saints’ Week Six bye.

Brees should get off to a hot start with the Saints likely leaning on him through the first month of the season with Pro Bowl running back Mark Ingram out for the first four games for violating the league's performance-enhancing drug policy. Second-year running back Alvin Kamara should be in line for an increased role in the backfield, but New Orleans doesn't want to wear him out that early in the season.

Keep in mind, Brees has shown that he can still perform at an elite level despite a notable drop in touchdown passes. He finished the 2017 season fourth in the league with 4,334 passing yards, first with a 72.0 completion rate, and second with a 103.9 passer rating. It was his 12th straight campaign with more than 4,000 passing yards, and his sixth overall posting a passer rating above 100.

It will be on Brees' shoulders to continue to put up those numbers, as he has the offensive talent around him to do so with Pro Bowl wide receiver Michael Thomas and the addition of former Chicago Bears wideout Cameron Meredith.
