The New Orleans Saints have plenty of work to do if they hope to get under the salary cap in time for free agency next week, and they parted ways with another starter in Janoris Jenkins on Thursday, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The move to release Jenkins creates another $7 million in cap space for the Saints this offseason. Besides Jenkins, New Orleans has already released several other notable players, with more on the way.

New Orleans has now released Jenkins, receiver Emmanuel Sanders, punter Thomas Morstead, tight end Josh Hill and offensive lineman Nick Easton. The Saints also are expected to release linebacker Kwon Alexander.

Following the move to part ways with Jenkins, the Saints are still $25.5 million over the cap. Seeing that New Orleans has a few marquee players set to hit free agency, they are focused on creating enough cap room to re-sign some of them to help keep this roster in contention.

Prior to his release, Jenkins had one full season with the Saints in 2020, recording three interceptions and 12 pass breakups. Jenkins joined New Orleans near the end of the 2019 season after being waived by the New York Giants.

Since joining the Saints, Jenkins was a solid No. 2 cornerback alongside Marshon Lattimore. Of the players New Orleans has released thus far, Jenkins is likely the most important one given how the current roster is constructed.

With the salary cap declining this offseason due to COVID-19, teams around the NFL are forced to make decisions on certain players. Despite being released, Jenkins — who will be turning 33 years old during the 2021 season — likely won't have much trouble finding a new place to call home as he is now free to sign anywhere he wants.
