The New Orleans Saints have decided to release tight end Coby Fleener after two years with the team, the Boston Globe’s Ben Volin reports.

The Saints stand to save $3 million against their cap this year if they designate Fleener as a post-June 1 release. If they don’t, then the tight end will count as $8.2 million in dead money.

Fleener, 29, signed with the Saints in free agency in 2016 after spending his first four years in the league with the Indianapolis Colts. Fleener showed promise as a receiving threat in Indianapolis. He had a career year in 2014 when he had 774 yards on 51 catches and eight touchdowns. There were high hopes that Fleener could take on the Jimmy Graham role in the Saints offense as one of Drew Brees’ top targets.

However, it never quite worked out that well for Fleener. In two years in New Orleans, he totaled just 72 catches for 926 yards and five touchdowns, which is a meager return considering his status as one of the highest-paid tight ends in the league.

Fleener saw his role in the Saints offense significantly reduced last season as he had just 22 catches (on 30 targets) for 295 yards, his lowest numbers in his rookie season. He was limited to just 11 games after suffering a concussion, but he didn’t start a single game as he lost his starting spot to Josh Hill and Michael Hoomanawanui.

The Saints, who made tight end a priority this offseason, brought back veteran Benjamin Watson in free agency to provide a more reliable receiving threat at the position. He joins Hill and Hoomanawanui on the depth chart now that Fleener's gone.
