There has been plenty of speculation regarding the state of the New Orleans Saints' receiver corps. It appears Rishard Matthews is not going to be part of the solution.

According to ESPN's Field Yates, the Saints have cut Matthews:

The Saints have cut veteran WR Rishard Matthews (left squad designation), per source.

Matthews has struggled to find his footing ever since his release from the Tennessee Titans. He finished the 2018 campaign with the New York Jets before signing with the Saints this offseason.

Matthews' time in New Orleans has come to an end after just one preseason game. He registered just one catch for seven yards in a loss to the Minnesota Vikings in the preseason opener.

Matthews' release raises even more questions about the depth in New Orleans' receiver corps. The Saints broke the bank to make Michael Thomas the highest-paid wide receiver in the league this offseason. There is no question about his status as a bonafide No. 1 option in the passing game. However, there is quite a gap between him and the next best player in this group. As a result, the team hopes that one of its unproven players can step up as a legitimate complementary option to Thomas.

Meanwhile, Matthews' prospects are not looking too bright after failing to etch out a role in the Big Easy. With just three weeks left in the preseason, Matthews will need to do what he can to get acquainted with another team in time for the start of the 2019 NFL season.
