New Orleans Saints rookie quarterback Ian Book got absolutely punished by the Miami Dolphins defense in Monday night's 20-3 loss. With the loss in his first-ever NFL regular-season start, Book became part of an infamous streak for Notre Dame Fighting Irish quarterbacks, per Elias Sports (h/t ESPN Stats & Info).

Notre Dame QBs have now lost 24 straight starts in the NFL…

– 4 by Brady Quinn
– 4 by Jimmy Clausen
– 15 by DeShone Kizer
– 1 by Ian Book

That is the longest losing streak by starting QBs from a particular college since 1950

Ouch.

That's got to hurt for Notre Dame football fans. As for Saints fans, they certainly forgive Book, who was clearly thrown wolves.

Just looking at the names of those quarterbacks can be somewhat painful for fans of teams Quinn and company have played for. DeShone Kizer is the biggest contributor to that embarrassing streak, having gone winless in starts for the Cleveland Browns and the Green Bay Packers.

With Jameis Winston done for the season and both Taysom Hill and Trevor Siemian unavailable for the Week 16 home game, the Saints were forced to reach deep down in their quarterback pecking order and elected to start Book. The rookie then finished with 135 passing yards and two interceptions with zero touchdowns on 12/20 completions. One of the picks he threw was returned for a touchdown by Dolphins cornerback Nik Needham.

It would be unfair to project Book's future in the league based on one disastrous start. The…err…book shouldn't be closed on the Saints' first-year QB just yet.
