The Seattle Seahawks made quite the investment when they selected running back Rashaad Penny in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. However, it appears to be running back Chris Carson's job to lose going into training camp.

The selection of Penny seemed to establish a new pecking order in Seattle's backfield. According to ESPN's Brady Henderson, Carson is currently listed as the starting running back in training camp:

Seahawks’ second training camp practice is over. A good day for some of the young receivers, Marcus Johnson and David Moore. Chris Carson still working as the No. 1 RB. Seahawks are off tomorrow.

Outside of a few backfields in the NFL, it is safe to take any update with a grain of salt at this point. There could be a number of reasons why they have Carson as the No. 1 back.

The former seventh-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft showed plenty of promise early on in his rookie campaign. Carson registered 208 yards on 49 carries, seven catches for 59 yards and one touchdown in his first four games. Unfortunately, he was soon forced to miss the rest of the season due to a number of injuries to his left leg which required surgery. However, it appears the Seahawks still have high hopes for Carson this season.

Despite his promise, Seattle still felt a heavy need to bring another running back into the mix. Perhaps they could simply be forcing Penny to establish himself as the lead back in camp. Regardless, it is safe to assume that both will take on heavy roles in the backfield this season.
