The Seattle Seahawks have a quarterback clash on their hands with the departure of Russell Wilson. Former backup Geno Smith and new arrival Drew Lock have both been vying for the starting spot. But there has been some light buzz on a potential big-name player getting linked to Emerald City – Cam Newton.

Sheena Quick of Fox Sports Radio 1340 corroborated the recent report that Newton was still on the Carolina Panthers' radar, but also listed the Seahawks as another team looking into the former NFL MVP.

Via Anthony Rizzuti of Panthers Wire:

According to Sheena Quick of Fox Sports Radio 1340, the Seahawks—in addition to the Panthers—have shown the most recent interest in the former Most Valuable Player. This latest bit comes one week after a report from The Charlotte Observer, in which Jonathan M. Alexander wrote Carolina could offer a Newton an opportunity at a reduced capacity—both in terms of role and salary.

However, at least one trusted source in Seahawks reporter Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times claims that there is some truth to the rumor … last season.

My understanding is that any report of the Seahawks being interested in Cam Newton isn't accurate. They were last year when Russell Wilson got hurt, but my understanding is they aren't right now. Newton is currently a free agent.

While right now Cam Newton to Seattle still seems so far away, there's still a few months before the very first snap of Seahawks football. A lot can happen between then and now.
