Philadelphia 76ers big man Al Horford has donated $500,000 to aid those affected by the novel coronavirus pandemic in his home country of the Dominican Republic and various regions of the U.S., according to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium. Besides his charitable donation to his homeland, the Sixers big man is also helping those affected in Michigan, Gainesville (FL.), Atlanta, Boston, and Philly.

Horford played high school ball at Grand Ledge High School in Grand Ledge, Michigan after his parents moved to East Lansing in 2000. He would then star for the Florida Gators for three seasons before declaring for the NBA Draft and being selected by the Atlanta Hawks.

After eight seasons in the ATL, he spent his next three in Boston and recently signed a four-year, $108 million deal with the Sixers this past summer after turning down a $30 million player option for 2019-20.

Horford's father, Tito, also played basketball in the NBA, playing for three seasons after being drafted in the second round of the 1988 NBA Draft. His uncle, Kelly Horford, played at Florida Atlantic University in the early 1990s, and his brother, Jon, played at the University of Michigan and at the University of Florida.

The Sixers veteran not only has strong roots planted in the Dominican Republic, but he also married 2003 Miss Universe Amelia Vega in Santo Domingo in 2011.

Horford has been known for a number of charitable contributions throughout his long NBA career, and this latest one provides for every place he has touched throughout his life and career.
