If you thought that Ben Simmons could possibly take the court for the Sixers on Friday against the Brooklyn Nets, think again. Following his one-game suspension and Doc Rivers booting him from practice earlier this week, it's now being reported that Simmons is dealing with a back injury that will keep him out indefinitely. The Aussie is also not mentally ready to play. Via Shams Charania:
Sources: 76ers All-Star Ben Simmons is currently not mentally ready to play for the team and was receiving treatment on his back today due to ramp up process. He will miss Friday’s home opener vs. Nets and is not expected to play for an undetermined period of time.

Another drastic turn in this Sixers saga. Simmons wasn't even expected to return to Philly after he made it very clear he wanted out, but ultimately the 25-year-old realized the only way he could improve his trade stock is by playing for the team again.
Based on Shams' report, it appears Simmons may have hurt his back due to the work he's done since coming back to the Sixers. Per Woj, the guard didn't participate in any individual workouts on Thursday either:

At this point, it's hard to believe the Sixers and Simmons repairing this relationship, especially when he's not even healthy enough to get on the floor and show what he can do. But, there is also a belief from sources around the league that Simmons could be potentially faking the injury in order to not compete for the organization. After all, he's had back and knee problems in the past.
How will this entire saga end? Stay tuned.
